Being Albanian

It’s what unites us. Many of us were born in Albanian lands, many of us were born here in the United States – but what we share is pride for our language, our customs and our wonderful traditions.

This year, we celebrate 100 years of independence. A lot of organizations are organizing festivities to commemorate this important milestone and we’re proud to be one of them! When all of us at the Albanian Cultural Club sat down to talk about how our group wanted to celebrate with the community, the answer was easy. We wanted to host an event that would celebrate our roots while ensuring that our common Albanian values were passed on to the next generation.

To celebrate 100 years of independence, we wanted to raise $10,000 to ensure that Albanian culture, traditions and values are forever celebrated all over the world and especially here in our local community in Southeast Michigan. With your support, we can raise $10,000 to support the programs of Shkolla Shqipe, an institution that is building the leaders of tomorrow in the Albanian community.

So, celebrate with us! Please make a gift , volunteer your time and/or services and join us on November 17th to celebrate our common roots – to celebrate being Albanian!

I Am Albanian

November 28, 2012 will be an important year for all Albanians around the world. 1912, 100 years from this year our country was declared a free and independent country. The strength and determination of our people achieved something so dear and so valuable to all of us in this day, our freedom.

I would like to share with you a personal story. On the first day of class, each student introduced themselves and gave one fact about themselves. I stated my name and said I Am Albanian! At the end of class one of the classmates asked me where is Albania and what it means to be Albanian. (Most likely you have encountered the same question)

First, I started to give a short description of Albania and where Albania is located in the map, then I explained what I meant by I Am Albanian!

Being Albanian for me means being proud of the hardworking people, their resilience to get things done but most importantly their hearts. Yes, I did mention hearts. I am not talking about the organ , I am talking about the old Albanian expression “Buke e kripe e zemer” ( Bread, salt and heart). I am talking about our peoples heart welcoming, their tendency to share what they have with others and their love for each other.

Thus, in this 100th year of Independence we owe to our people to make Albania, our country, known to others. So share with us what it means for you to be Albanian. Post on our facebook page https://www.facebook.com/albanianculture share your videos with us on twitter under the #AlbanianCulture

In this 100 year we want to trend Albania on Twitter, so stay tuned with further instructions on how we can achieve this together.

With Respect,

Albanian Cultural Club
